What’s a jib?

A jib is the forward most sail on a vessel.
Different nations and forces. Had different cuts in different shapes (ie triangle, square, rectangle, etc...). From a distance it was a way of telling what nation the vessel was from and if it was a friend or foe. Not liking the cut of someone's jib is reference seeing a jib of a foe and in turn, them not being a friend or liked.

Shameless self plug. I did a little write up on r/ask historians in answer to someone asking about the naval background of that saying.
